Network Attached Storage Information
Network Attached Storage or NAS
refers to a device that is addressable directly over a network. Usually
using one or more ethernet interfaces, the system will be addressable
via IP address or a network name. The vast majority of NAS units are capable
of supporting clients of different operating systems - Windows, Apple
Mac, Linux etc.
Full featured NAS systems will contain one or more
hard disks in either a JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks) configuration or shipped
already configured as a RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks). Capacities
are usually quoted in the JBOD configuration to avoid confusion. Hence
a 1Tb NAS unit which can run RAID5, will consist of 4 x 250Gb hard disks
which total 1Tb in a JBOD configuration. NAS removes the responsibility
of file serving from other servers on the network and generally offers
significant performance benefits.
Most NAS units are manipulated by means of web
interface and have no keyboard, video or mouse capabilities. They range
from small desktop units to rackmountable arrays.
Network Attached Storage servers use protocols
such as NFS (popular on UNIX systems), SMB (Server Message Block) used
with Windows systems and even AFP for compatibility with Mac OS 9. Clients
running OS X are generally better supported as they no longer rely on
AFP.
MultiTask Computing retail NAS units from Snap
Appliance (the leading light in NAS for SMBs to Enterprise),
Thecus (which are ideal for home users as well as small
businesses), Netgear (who now own Infrant and are shipping
the ReadyNAS units) and more.
